Christmas in Cusco

Christmas away from home is always hard, you miss time with family, friends, and age old traditions. But having Skype to stay connected to loved ones makes it easier and so does being surrounded by new, like minded friends, good food and new traditions.

This past Christmas we shared with 30 some other travelers and from what we counted, over 10 different nationalities. As a result we had an enormous pot luck and forged some new relationships and had a lot of fun.

Nose?

A trip to the market was made to get all the trimmings for Christmas dinner. Just not sure what to do with sheep’s heads and noses?

Nativity scene

The Christmas Eve tradition in Cusco is a giant craft fair in the Plaza de Armas where you can buy trinkets for the stockings and get everything you need to make your own nativity scene.

Hundreds of baby Jesus'

Not entirely sure of the tradition but hundreds of different types of baby Jesus’ and associated bassinets and clothing can be bought outside the main church. It was explained to me that many people purchase these “dolls” and worship them like their own.

Several different traditional types of dress and dances were on display in the main plaza Christmas Day.
