Guatemala: Detailed Route Information

 

Since we are getting a little more off the beaten path we thought it would be useful to provide detailed travel information for anyone else interested in our route along with information on where we stayed and what we recommend. Please let us know if there is additional information you’d like to see on the upcoming posts with specific route information. Maps and elevation maps from Map My Ride.

Quetzaltenengo to Totonicipan – 33 km

- north from Xela on the 1 towards Cuatro Caminos then west through Nimapá to Totonicipan

- road wide in most places, busy with traffic until Cuatro Caminos but drivers decent.

- just before Toto tough little climb and some head winds can be hindering.

Accommodation: Hotel Totonicipan

Comments: Nice people, no rooms on 1st floor, not worth the price,  no internet but not many other choices

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 250 Q (double)

WiFi - No

 

Totonicipan to El Santa Cruz del Quiche – 43 km

- Route 1 (not CA-1 but Regional 1)

- climb out of Totonicipan into the clouds.

- not much shoulder but light traffic.

- amazing scenery.

Accommodation: Hotel Shalom

Comments: Dirty, no rooms 1st floor and charged too much (INGUAT quoted max. 170Q)

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 180 Q (double)

WiFi - Yes

 

El Quiche to Sacapulas – 49 km

- Hwy 15 to 7W

-  no shoulder but little traffic

- ride is very much up and down river valleys

Accommodation: Hospedaje Tujal

Comments: perfect little room, second floor, clean, beautiful view of the room, restaurant/bar lower level.

Hot Water: at times

Price: 100 Q (double)

WiFi - No

 

Sacapulas to Uspantan – 40 km

- following the 7W

- hardest day with a hard 12km climb 8-10% grade out of Sacapulas

- quick and long decent to Cunen

- views stunning and great, friendly Pueblas

- Uspantan itself is nice with a cloud forest 24 km’s away

Accommodation: Hotel Dona Leonora

Comments: clean, comfy, friendly, nice garden

Hot Water: yes

Price: 140 Q (double)

WiFi - Yes

 

Uspantan to Cobán – 83 km

- following the 7W

- hard ride

- first 20 km’s decent from Uspantan down to the Chioxy River

- amazing mountain scenery

- giant landslide outside of San Cristóbal Verapaz about 2 km’s in length and took a long time to hike back up although we were offered rides by a few people.

Accommodation: Hotel Central

Comments: clean with decent restaurant attached, good restaurant: “El Bistro”

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 170 Q (double)

WiFi - Yes

 

Coban to Lanquin – 63 km

- the gravel road after the pavement ends east of Cobán is rough and a steep 11 km decent

- would be very difficult, if not impossible to ride back up, especially after rain. We elected for a shuttle out north to Sayaxache

- lots to do close by incl. Grutas de Lanquin and Semuc Champey

Accommodation: Hostel Zephyr

Comments: backpacker’s party place, good food, amazing view dangerous tab system can be loud at night.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 30 Q per person to camp / 80 Q per person private room

WiFi - Yes, but spotty

 

Sayaxaché – shuttled here from Lanquin

Accommodation: Restaurante Yaxkín

Comments: not overly clean and the plumbing needs work, owners nice and basic menu.

Hot Water: No

Price: 60 Q (double) , shared bathroom

WiFi - No

Sayaxaché to El Remate – 110 km

- the flattest riding we have done in Guatemala made for easy distances.

Accommodation: Mon Ami

Comments: the pillows are musty and the rooms didn’t have mosquito nets, good ambiance and easy access to the WONDERFUL lake. Close to the park near by where entrance is 40Q per person and includes camping.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 150 Q (double) with shared bath.

WiFi - Yes

 

El Remate to Tikal – 36 km

- up and down ride, wildlife becomes abundant as you enter into Tikal

- 150 Q entrance fee per person, per day. Best time to be in the park is after 2pm when all the crowds leave.

Accommodation: Tent in the National Park Campground

Comments: Wide open spot with shower and bathroom amenities and a guard that watches carefully over all you stuff. You can camp at Jaguar Inn for 25 Q pp but the camping area can be cramped. The Jaguar serves decent food but small quantities.

Hot Water: No

Price: 50 Q per person

WiFi - No

 

Tikal to El Remate – 36 km

Accommodation: La Casa de Don David

Comments: Wonderful place with an amazing set dinner (vegetarian options), gorgeous gardens and price of the room includes one meal.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 356 Q double occupancy

WiFi - Yes – only near the common area.

 

El Remate to Finca Ixobel – 120 km

- Route 3 and CA 13

- long day with ups and downs

Accommodation: Finca Ixobel

Comments: Amazing place that you can camp at, great buffet dinner with all you can eat for 65Q.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 25 Q pp for camping.

WiFi - Yes – only near the common area.

 

Finca Ixobel to Río Dulce – 103 km

- Route CA 13 then launcha

- easier ride than the day before.

Accommodation: Casa Perico

Comments: Basic, bit of a backpackers place, food is nothing special and can’t swim here.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 130 Q double

WiFi - Yes

 

Río Dulce

- took launcha further up the river

Accommodation: Finca Tatin

Comments: amazing place with great food in a quiet location, lots of activities and great place to swim.

Hot Water: No

Price: 180 Q for private cabaña

WiFi - Yes – only in the evenings

 

Río Dulce to Los Amates – 75 km

Accommodation: Hospetaledaje Don Tono

Comments: Basic.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 150 Q double

WiFi - No

 

Los Amates to Chiquimula- 100 km

- climb right out of Los Amates

- in the heat this stretch is VERY hot

Accommodation: Hotel Henandez

Comments: Basic.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 180 Q double

WiFi - Yes

 

Chiquimula to Copan Ruinas – 64 km

- hard climbs from Chiquimula to Copan, 2 km’s after the border to Honduras there is a nice decent into Copan.

Accommodation: Via Via

Comments: Fantastic little place with only 5 rooms, great food and atmosphere.

Hot Water: Yes

Price: 120 Q double

WiFi - Yes
